WiFi and Homeplug connections may operate below the maximum speed your Fibre service is capable of. With the marked increase in Fibre speeds compared to copper services, like ADSL and ADSL2+, you are more likely to encounter limitations in the performance of your home or office network. Your network may be performing below the speed of the Fibre service As more users take up Fibre services you are likely to see the effects of contention more frequently. The minimum speeds shown above show the 'at worst' effect this has on what speeds you can achieve at the busiest times of the day. There are a few reasons why you may not see the maximum speed possible for your connection: Fibre is a shared bandwidth service, subject to contentionīroadband services are affected by contention - this means you share bandwidth with other Broadband users in order to make it possible for a faster service to be provided at an affordable price.
FIBRE OPTIC DOWNLOAD SPEED TEST PLUS
In this example the range of speeds acceptable for the connection are between 16 Mbps (this customer is on a Zen Fibre Office or Zen Fibre Office Plus service) and 47.43 Mbps therefore the download speed test result of 42.62 Mbps is within the acceptable range for the service. The second line of text shows the acceptable speed range for your connection (minimum-maximum)
In the box below the bar you will see some further detail.
The first bar shows the download speed achieved on the speed test: Here is an example of a BT Speed Tester result: To get additional detail after the initial test, click Further Diagnostics and enter the telephone number for the line you are testing and click Run Diagnostic Test this will then show you the acceptable speed range your connection is capable of and will also test how fast the connection is currently.
You can test how fast your service is performing using the BT Speed Tester. Your service is operating normally if your speeds are within the minimum and maximum speeds based on the above. These will gradually reduce to a level similar to the original estimate over time due to crosstalk (Fibre service signals interfering with one-another).ĭuring busy periods, when other people are using their Fibre services, speeds may drop to the minimum speeds shown below (dependant on the service achieving a connection speed above the minimum threshold):Ģ0 Mbps (or 70% of connection speed, if that is below this threshold)Ĥ0 Mbps (or 70% of connection speed, if that is below this threshold)Ħ0 Mbps (or 80% of connection speed, if that is below this threshold) When your service is initially installed (particularly if Fibre has only just become available in your area) you may see speeds above the estimate. This is an expected maximum speed in perfect conditions.
This provides a result based on the length and quality of your line. You can see an estimate of the maximum speed your line is capable of using our Availability Checker. What speeds should I expect on my Fibre Broadband service? If problems do persist after this time please use this guide to help determine what the cause may be. Note for new customers, or customers upgradingįollowing the installation of your Fibre Optic Broadband service you may experience some fluctuation in performance, along with occassional - brief - connection drops, during the first week of service as your connection "adapts" to the characteristics of your line. This article provides a summary of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the speeds achieved on Zen's Fibre Optic Broadband services.
